Russell finished 4-1 in the 0-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Russell defeated Ron Birklid (Fairbanks, AK) 9-8, then won 7-1 against Dave Hufman (Fairbanks, AK). Russell went on to lose 5-4 against Larry Sharp (Rice Lake, WI). Russell responded with a 7-6 win over Jensen. Russell won 7-5 against Jeff Wright (Libertyville, IL) in their final qualifying round match.
