To advance to the championship game, Ruohonen won 7-1 over Dominik Maerki (Minneapolis, MN) in the semifinals of the 2018 Curl Mesabi Classic in Eveleth, Minnesota, United States; and won 6-2 over Jason Smith (Blaine, MN) in the quarterfinals.
 
Ruohonen finished 4-0 in the 20-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Ruohonen defeated 's Scott Dunnam 7-3, then won 9-0 against Darryl Sobering (Denver, CO) and 7-6 against Joe Polo (Eveleth, MN). Ruohonen won 7-2 against Steven Birklid (Seattle, WA) in their final qualifying round match.
 
For winning the Curl Mesabi Classic Championship title, Ruohonen earned 26.768 world rankings points along with the $6,634CDN first prize cheque. Ruohonen move up 2 spots after posting a net gain of 5.864 points improving upon their best 7 results so far this season, ranking 19th overall with 220.304 total points on the World Ranking Standings.
