Joel Retornaz (Trentino, ITA) finished 7-5 in the 13-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Retornaz lost 6-4 to Yuta Matsumura (Sapporo, JPN), then responded with a 9-3 win over Marc Muskatewitz (Baden Baden, GER). Retornaz went on to lose 9-5 against Kevin Koe (Calgary, CAN). Retornaz responded with a 8-2 win over Qiang Zou (Beijing, CHN). Retornaz won 10-4 against Magnus Ramsfjell (Oslo, NOR), then won 5-3 against Sergei Glukhov (Sochi, RUS). Retornaz went on to lose 8-3 against John Shuster (Duluth, USA). Retornaz responded with a 9-4 win over SooHyuk Kim (Seoul, KOR). Retornaz won 6-5 against Peter De Cruz (Geneve, SUI), then won 6-4 against Jaap van Dorp (Zoetermeer, NED). Retornaz went on to lose 7-4 against Niklas Edin (Karlstad, SWE). Retornaz lost 9-5 to Bruce Mouat (Stirling, SCO) in their final qualifying round match.

Retornaz earned 30.128 world rankings points for their preliminary round wins, moving up 15 spots the World Ranking Standings into 31st place overall with 121.794 total points. Retornaz ranks 31st overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 121.794 points earned so far this season.
