Hammy McMillan (Stranraer, SCO) qualified for the 2009 Bern Open playoffs, dropping their quarterfinals match 7-3 against Thomas Ulsrud (Oslo, NOR). of the 2009 Bern Open in Bern, Switzerland;

McMillan finished 4-2 in the 32-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, McMillan defeated Pierre Charette (Etchemin, PQ) 6-4, then went on to lose 6-2 against Manuel Ruch (Uitikon, SUI). McMillan lost 8-7 to Mark Neeleman (Zoetemeer, NED) where McMillan responded with a 5-4 win over Thomas Dufour (Chamonix, FRA). McMillan won 5-3 against Ruch, then won 7-4 against Sweden's Per Carlsen in their final qualifying round match.

McMillan earned 7.710 world rankings points for their Top 5 finish in the Bern Open. For week of the event schedule, McMillan did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. McMillan ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
