To advance to the championship game, Tonuma won 7-5 over Yuki Asanuma (Morioka, JPN) in the semifinals of the Morioka City Mens Memorial Cup in Morioka, Japan;
Tonuma finished 2-1 in the 8-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Tonuma defeated Satoru Tsukamoto (Yamanakako, JPN) 6-5, then went on to lose 6-3 against Noguchi. Tonuma responded with a 5-2 win over Chikara Segawa (Morioka, JPN) in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the Morioka City Mens Memorial Cup Championship title, Tonuma earned 3.750 world rankings points along with the $743CDN first prize cheque, dropping 281 spots on the World Ranking Standings into 281st place overall with 3.750 total points. Tonuma ranks 7th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 3.750 points earned so far this season.
