In their opening game, Vargas defeated Harold Woods (Accra, NGR) 8-7, then went on to lose 13-3 against Marcelo Cabral de Mello (Sao Paolo, BRA). Vargas lost 11-5 to P.N. Raju (Hyderabad, IN). Vargas lost 9-6 to Nasser Alyafei (Doha, QAT). Vargas lost 11-3 to Abylay Zhuzbay (Almaty, KAZ). Vargas lost 11-2 to Marc Pfister (Manilla, PHI). Vargas lost 7-4 to Ian Robertson (Kingston, JAM) where Vargas responded with a 10-7 win over Amar Masalmeh (Riyadh, KSA). Vargas won 10-7 against Haggai Odhiambo Ogak (Nairobi, KEN). Vargas went on to lose 10-5 against Jason Chang (Hong Kong, HKG) in their final qualifying round match.

Vargas earned 0.563 world rankings points for their preliminary round wins. For week 14 of the event schedule, Vargas did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Vargas ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
