To advance to the championship game, McDonald won 8-5 over Jia Liang Zang (Harbin, CHN) in the semifinals of the 2018 Challenge de Curling de Gatineau (Arena) in Buckingham, Quebec, Canada; and won 7-6 over Michael Fournier (Montreal, QC) in the quarterfinals. of the 2018 Challenge de Curling de Gatineau (Arena) in Buckingham, Quebec, Canada;
 
McDonald finished 5-2 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, McDonald lost 8-2 to Brent MacDougall (Halifax, NS), then responded with a 6-4 win over Doug Kee (Ottawa, ON). McDonald won 6-5 against John Epping (Toronto, ON). McDonald went on to lose 5-3 against Mark Homan (Chelsea, QC). McDonald responded with a 7-0 win over Greg Smith (St. John's, NL). McDonald won 7-5 against MacDougall, then won 5-4 against Steve Allen (Ottawa, ON) in their final qualifying round match.
