Gert Messing (Ballston Lake, NY) finished 5-3 in the 0-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Messing defeated Craig Halliday (Denver, CO) 4-3, then won 7-6 against Ross Litman (Duluth, MN). Messing went on to lose 5-4 against Mike Farbelow (Minneapolis, MN). Messing responded with a 8-4 win over Dwayne Jacobson (Junction City, WI). Messing went on to lose 7-1 against Philip DeVore (Superior, WI). Messing responded with a 9-5 win over Steve Shuttleworth (Fairbanks, AK). Messing won 5-4 against Farbelow. Messing went on to lose 9-6 against Paul Pustovar (Hibbing, MN) in their final qualifying round match.
